The exiles’ confidence in God had been shaken and they were concerned for their future. They had forgotten their story, which was the history of the Lord’s relationship with His creation in general and with His people, Israel, in particular. The Jewish people had yet to realize that because they had a history with God, they would have a future with Him as well. The Lord will not fail those who abide in Him, who listen for His voice, who obey His mandates, and rely upon His faithfulness in all things. Isaiah encourages Israel not to become disillusioned and reminds them that their God will give them the needed strength to accomplish their mission —they must only trust in Him.
