Where are my girls…??? (Or, The Origin of Bagels...!) Hope everyone’s enjoying the Biblical culture and customs, Hebrew language, history, archaeology, life in modern and ancient Israel, in addition to Bible studies and insights from the Lord…! I know, it’s a lot to take in, at times. The “postcards” can turn into mini-books, if I don’t watch it, lol. Let’s just say, I’m generally not at a loss for things to say! Believe it or not, I’m a real person, with other responsibilities in life, not least of which should be the finishing up of my doctoral research (PhD) in Biblical archaeology. Truly thanking everyone for their prayers on that one! Occasionally, I draw back the curtain on my own life, fascinating as it may be-! Today’s one of those days. My girls have gone missing. Nothing about which we’re alarmed, just one of those things in a family that lives an international life. They’re in their early 20s, well-traveled, working and going to school, and on their way to being in a friend’s wedding in another far-flung part of the globe. So far that, technically, they could travel either east or west to get there…. And this is how it went down: A funny thing happened on the way to their destination…. Drop-off at the airport. Check. Everyone says their goodbyes. Check. They are safely on their way. Check. It’s Tuesday night and we are speaking in a meeting. Check. We start to get phone calls and texts. Their flight is delayed. Okay, I reassure them, we will pray that things speed up—don’t worry, the Lord is taking care of it. We ask everyone to pray. Next thing we hear, it’s delayed by three hours! Which means—they will miss connecting flights at the next stop. No can do. Stop the music! The girls appear to be young and cute, but they are also smart and prayed-up. The dynamic duo has made all of their own arrangements for flights, apartment, meeting their friend abroad, etc. They speak several languages, have a couple of different passports and citizenships, and understand that they have a limited window of opportunity. In other words, don’t mess with them! Before one could say “George Jetson” and “his boy, Elroy” (am I dating myself???), they have been rescheduled on new flights with a split-second pivot heard round the world, as they head in… yes, the opposite direction of the globe-! They have no time to talk or text as that jet is scheduled for takeoff in a matter of minutes. We got them to photograph their tickets for the next couple of flights, held in a hand with purple nail polish and no doubt shaking about now…! Our daughters are not seated anywhere near each other and they are fairly exhausted as the trip is only starting to begin-! Anyone who travels a lot can relate…. The two are headed via parts of the world that we had hoped they could avoid, but here we are! Ever thought you had already reserved your seat in life… only to find out that you’re not even on the flight you originally booked??? It happens. God still has a plan. Might not be Door #1, but destiny can still sneak up even when the camel traders make a deal and take Joseph into captivity, sell him off as a slave in a foreign land, as he works his way out of that mess, as he starts to be promoted, only to be falsely accused and then thrown into a foreign prison. One setback after another. From bad to worse. But God…. And so, 24 hours pass. I try not to imagine them waylaid anywhere else! The mind can play tricks if we let it run. Some have minds not able to handle a sprint, much less a marathon, of running wild…. They have Bibles. They have snacks. They should be fine! As the picture shows, even on the side of the road, our Eastern European family roots would have them making chai in a steaming samovar and eating bubliki, the little rings of wheat bread, boiled and baked, the pre-cursor to the Ashkenazi Jewish bagel. Actually, our kids enjoy what we might call baranki, which are smaller, thinner in circumference than a bulblik. No actually, make that sushki. (No, not sushi, but they like that, too. Me? Not so much—I pay to have my food cooked!) Sushki are even smaller and drier wheat bread circles, maybe 2 inches (5 cm) in size. An acquired taste due to its dryness, which of course means that we dip it in chai (tea). Saves on the teeth, that way! Sushki, like the others, can be carried on a string. That’s the traditional Russian/Ukrainian/Polish way. Makes a nice fashion necklace if the bags get lost! And now it’s a couple of days later. We’ve received half a text from their halfway point. Not much internet. No sim card for a place they never imagined being. They’ve been flying “forever”. Such troopers. It made me think of sushki, those hard little mini-bagels. Tough. Can last through anything without crumbling. Donuts are different. They have “holes” that are pressed out. Sushki and the others are rolled into little dough sausages and then squeezed at both ends to make the circle. Anyone felt the squeeze, lately? It’s to hold us together in Him! There are jokes in Eastern European languages about ending up with nothing but “a hole from a bublik”. That would mean zippo! So many times, that’s how we envision situations heading south… but in the hands of the Lord… we can say with Joseph: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position…” (Genesis 50:20, NLT). Update: I just heard from the girls. (I’m here with the guys and the dogs and as usual, I’m the only one awake and at work.) They have arrived to their friend and are in their fancy high-rise, glass and steel apartment. The village comes in a couple of days-! Each got a card from me, hidden in their luggage, and they say thank you before sending a couple of pics and collapsing. Must mean the bags arrived, too. Praise the Lord. They will sleep well tonight! I think it’s nighttime there, but the light of the Lord still shines even with children, grown or not so grown, and far from home. Should you see anyone part-way on their journey, making chai by the side of the road, wearing a necklace of little bubliki—don’t worry—they’re safe in His hands! And they will return with stories to share and testimonies to tell-! The Lord is good. #Guidance #Protection #GrownKids #InternationalTravel #MissedFlights #DelayedFlights #LettingGo #GodIsFaithful #TrustingHimWithOurKids #TravelTales #Testimony #Safe #Bagels #Bubliki #Baranki #Sushki #Messianic #MB #PostcardFromIsrael
