Psalm 23 lists nine different benefits of God's goodness to you. 1. He will meet your needs when you're worried! Because God is a good God, He will meet all your needs when you're worried. "The Lord is my shepherd, I will lack nothing". 2. He will teach you how to relax when you're stressed out. "He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me besides quiet waters." This is a metaphor for peace and tranquility. He makes you lie down. He'll teach you how to relax when you're stressed. 3. He will replenish your strength when you're empty! The Bible says, "He restores my soul." Modern day translations say "He gives me new strength." God gives sustenance, he meets your needs when you're worried. He gives balance, he's going to teach you how to relax. He gives resilience, because he restores your soul. He fills you up when you're empty. 4. He will guide you when you're confused! God gives you guidance. "He guides me in the right paths for his namesake". 5. He will walk with you in your dark and fearful days! In dark and fearful days God is going to be with you. "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." 6. He will protect you when you feel insecure! "Your rod and your staff, they comfort me." The rod and staff are the two tools of a shepherd in leading sheep. Those tools are given to a shepherd for the benefit of the sheep. He will protect you when you feel insecure. That's God's assurance. 7. He will publicly show his favor on your life! "You prepare a banquet for me in front of all my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows." God wants to put favor on your life. Favor's another term for goodness or God's grace. God is not just going to meet your needs, you'll have abundance. 8. He will be good to you no matter what happens! "Surely, goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life." God's goodness and mercy will be with you, and you can handle anything if God's goodness and mercy are with you. That's his love, his benevolence. Anxiety doesn’t get the not-so-subtle hint it’s not welcome here. But my subconscious knows something’s up. I’m heading out of town for work and away from my familiar surroundings — my home and husband. How will I manage alone, left with my constant thoughts and suffocating fears? Three times during the daylight hours earlier, Psalm 23 was brought to my attention. The Lord is my Shepherd, leading me beside still waters, singing over me with the sweetness of His voice. He guides me with His wisdom, keeps me close and comforted when I walk that dark valley. I fear no evil because I know He is with me. (Psalm 23:4) But have I really eradicated fear from my mind and heart? My feelings show otherwise. When I worry, I fall away from the fold and find that I am wandering alone in the shadow of my mind. I lose sight of the Shepherd as I'm stalked by my thoughts, and panic closes in. But His feet find their way to my side, and He enfolds me in His arms. Stands in the overwhelm, runs His fingers through my hair and stays embraced with me until the cries subside and I realize He is close. He is close — the One who saves me for His name’s sake, for His righteousness, so He will never let me go. His ways bring goodness and mercy that follow us along the road, a guarantee to continue and cling to Him. This is the way we hear His voice singing again so we remember the melody. This is His heart holding ours. These are His steady words with us when we are unable to speak. We can make the decision to journey on and choose to trust that our Shepherd has His staff to still our thoughts and chase away the fear. We can say to Him, Shepherd our hearts, Jesus. Shepherd our minds, leading us away from the fears and worries that have joined us on this journey. - Sarah Freymuth What area of your life can you invite God to shepherd you in?

In our day-to-day usage, the word “discipline” tends to be associated with punishment — but Scripture describes discipline more like instruction and protection. Psalm 23 wonderfully illustrates this type of discipline, saying of God, our Shepherd: “Your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Shepherds regularly employed both these instruments to ensure their flocks were safe: •A rod was a short club for prodding the sheep in the right direction and fighting off threats. •A staff had a long crook on the end for redirecting the sheep — pulling them away from danger and placing them back on the correct path. The Good Shepherd’s rod is in play every time we open our Bibles. Like a standard shepherd’s rod prodded sheep, God’s Word prods us in the right direction and fends off the lies and attacks of the enemy. The Good Shepherd’s staff is more subtle. It is most visible to us in circumstances like the unexpectedly closed doors that redirect our plans or the sermons or conversations that convict and redirect my spirit. While I often want to respond to the frustration, disappointment, pain or discomfort of “staff” experiences, I remind myself that no matter how I feel, the objective truth is that the Lord’s discipline is an act of loving kindness. Friends, the Good Shepherd desires the flourishing of His beloved flock. His rod and His staff are there for our comfort — a persistent reminder that the Shepherd is present, watchful and protective, guiding us in the way of life eternal. -Danielle Hitchens ( Catechesis Books ) In what ways has that discipline produced fruit in your life?
